I find it fascinating that gardens really have a mind of their own. We have tried for years to grow zucchinis. We get nice blossoms and then nothing. But our neighbor directly across the street grows them in such quantity; she gave me the two giant ones below.
I was able to return the favor by giving her tomatoes and basil which love growing in our garden. As a matter of fact, half the tomatoes in our garden are leftovers from last summer – they just keep producing.
We’ve had good luck with our loquats and first crop of figs. Shown below is my favorite vine fruit of the season: passionfruit. I have to be patient. It will be quite some time before they turn purple, wrinkle, and drop to the ground ready to harvest.
One of the joys of gardening is sharing with neighbors and friends, but sometimes critters can spoil the party. We have a peach and nectarine tree. Neither of them are big producers, but we did have about a dozen fruit on each tree. One morning, I noticed half of them were gone. Very weird as they are close to the house and I couldn’t imagine anyone being brave enough to steal them. The next morning the trees were bare except for one fruit each.
To find the culprit, we put out our nature camera and learned the thief is not human. Something black, white and furry climbed into the peach tree at 4:00 in the morning. We didn’t get a video of its face, but we suspect a skunk or raccoon. A very well fed one…
Well, you know the saying: When life gives you zucchinis, you make delicious zucchini soup.
Happy gardening!
