While running an errand today, the song “The Rose” by Bette Midler came on. I don’t think I’ve heard her sing that song for over twenty years. For those who don’t remember, “The Rose” came out with the movie of the same name in 1979.
I may have been singing along, when about halfway through, I started getting emotional. By the end of the song, there were tears in my eyes.
Why did this song tug at my heart and why now? After a few thoughtful minutes, I realized that the touching lyrics and the beautiful piano and strings reminded me of what’s important. Hope. We may have a few more seasons of this trying pandemic, but with hope and following a few simple rules, we will get to spring.
Has anyone had an unexpected emotional reaction to a song recently? Please share what song it was, and I’ll keep it anonymous. I’m trying to find out if I’m just an old softy or if this is happening to anyone else. If I get enough responses, I’ll post them in my next blog.
I had to include the lyrics…yikes…I still can hardly read them.
“Some say love, it is a river, that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor, that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower, and you, its only seed
It’s the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance
It’s the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance
It’s the one who won’t be taken, who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed, that with the sun’s love in the spring becomes the rose”
