Several years ago, I became an angel statue whisperer. I don’t know if that’s really a thing, but I do love searching old cemeteries for beautiful angel statues. Recently, I had some time to kill (oh, how I love puns) and realized there are many cemeteries here in San Diego that I haven’t explored. So what better month than October to visit them. Here’s what I found at three of them.
El Camino Memorial Park This cemetery is extra special as some of my San Diego family rests here. After a long search, I found this lone angel on a hill near a tree.
Holy Cross Cemetery This is a Catholic cemetery complete with a chapel and mausoleum. It was difficult to find an angel is this cemetery because almost every tombstone was adorned with a statue of Jesus or Mary. But perseverance paid off, and I found this lovely lady.
Mt. Hope Cemetery The City of San Diego runs this cemetery. In the area where thousands of indigents were buried (many who died along the border), I found a statue called “Our Lady of Shoes.” It was a sister-city gift to then San Diego Mayor Susan Golding in 1999 by Mayor Jorge Carlos Obregon of Leon, Mexico and later installed in 2009. A few feet behind her is the San Diego Trolley Line that passes through the property.
My last photo is also from Mt. Hope. There is something creepy about the word “Mother” and nothing else on this tombstone. Whose mother is this? When did she live? When did she die? I would not want to be in this part of the cemetery at night to find out. Happy Halloween!
