When I visit a new place, especially one that is rich historically, I love to check out the cemeteries. In particular, I look for angels…not the spirit kind of angel…the statue kind.
In Columbia, South Carolina, I sought out the Elmwood Cemetery. The Elmwood Cemetery dates back to 1854 and covers over 150 acres. It has an area devoted to the Confederate dead which makes you feel like you’re visiting a military cemetery. In 1996, the cemetery was listed in the National Register.
Pictured below are four statues I found while walking through this peaceful place. Each evoke a different feeling – something between sadness and holiness. One lady doesn’t have wings, but she was so beautiful, I included her. Click on the images to enlarge them.
