A Visit to Anacapa Island

I’d never heard of Anacapa until last weekend when my daughter treated me to a Wildlife Cruise. Departing from Oxnard, our three hour cruise included a trip to the edge of Anacapa. Despite the fact that many folks from SoCal have at least visited Santa Catalina, this was my first visit to the Channel Islands

My daughter knew enough to bring extra layers for mom. These came in handy as we stood in the bow of the boat for the best views.

We didn’t see any whales but we saw three types of dolphins and it was awesome. I had no idea that the dolphins liked to swim right along the side of the boat.  If you don’t see the embedded link below, copy and paste this link to see the dolphin video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/NnMicg6O

In this next photo they are playing in the boat’s wake. You can’t stop smiling when watching dolphins.

As we approached Anacapa, we saw sea lions, harbor seals and many types of seabirds (thousands nest here due to lack of predators). My favorite view is this arch.

I highly recommend this cruise for newbies!

Notes:  Anacapa is one of eight islands in the Channel Islands National Park. The Chumash Native American Indians inhabited the Islands for many centuries. And, if you want to see whales, winter is the better time….brrrr.
